Let It Grow!

June 11, 2015

I recently decided that I wanted to grow more of my own food. So what do I need to do now? Well, at my home, we have a little garden box, which is dominated by lovely herbs and some other green leafy stuff my housemates planted. But I want more!

In April, I went to the Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh’s community garden event and found some amazing small space gardening ideas. There was a strawberry plant growing out of an old wellie boot. They even gave me a jalapeno plant, which is growing like mad! This experience at the RBGE had inspired me to want to grow more.

A few of us at work have decided to team up and grown some food together this summer.  We contact the Edible Edinburgh Campus team and they were happy to help us out, they even delivered the box straight to us! For the planning of our garden we had to make some decisions on what to grow. We decided on some salad greens rocket and spinach, and of course the jalapeno. We are also thinking to plant some radishes, broad beans and even try a tomato plant to see what happens.

If you are thinking of starting a wee garden of your own I found this blog post called Dig In, which has some info on what grows well in Scotland. Also on the blog there is a link to eat seasonably, which has a list of 10 easy to grown fruit and veg!

Now that we have a few things started in the garden at work, I will keep you posted on how we get on. If you have a garden growing at home or with colleagues and want to share your experiences, please give me a shout in the comments below or by email.
