What They Call Junk Food

June 25, 2015

Yesterday evening I had the opportunity to go to a fantastic food waste forum with The Real Junk Food Project Edinburgh and Bristol Skipchen at the Edinburgh Larder. The two groups had partnered up to make a ‘pay as you feel’ meal with food rescued from the bin, there was also a debate after the meal on the media coverage of the French legislation to require supermarkets to donate food waste to charity and the coverage of Tesco donating to FareShare.

I ate an amazing caramelised onion tart with rosemary potatoes and a balsamic dressed salad. It was simply delicious and everything was diverted from being binned to belly. I could not resist and ate a few bites before remembering to take the photo below.

I chatted with a few volunteers from Bristol Skipchen, and learned that they have travel around parts of the UK with a repurposed ambulance turned food truck and rescue food from the bin and turn it into yummy meals!

The Real Junk Food Project Edinburgh  do not have a food truck, but they are working on a pop up basis and currently run biomonthly Sunday pop-up cafes at the Union of Genius café on Forest Road. Check out their Facebook page to learn more.
